In 1954, an exciting chapter began for Harts Stores when it was acquired by Big Bear Stores Co., a prominent supermarket chain based in Columbus, Ohio. Initially operating in the basements of two Big Bears, Harts experienced rapid expansion under this new ownership. Big Bear strategically opened grocery stores alongside Harts Department Stores, often utilizing adjacent spaces or repurposing vacant locations left by other department stores.

The Harts brand thrived, and at its zenith in the late 1980s, there were a remarkable 29 Harts Stores. However, as the 1990s unfolded, Big Bear faced a crucial decision. They chose to shift their focus towards the Big Bear Plus store format, favoring it over the Harts general merchandise format. This strategic move led to a gradual phasing out of Harts Stores, either through closures or conversions.

In 1991, ten locations that were previously side-by-side Big Bear and Harts Stores underwent a transformation, embracing the Big Bear Plus format. This decision aimed to consolidate efforts and streamline operations, aligning with the evolving needs of customers.

By 1996, the final chapter for Harts Stores had drawn to a close. All remaining Harts locations had either been closed or converted into Big Bear Plus Stores, marking the end of an era for the beloved department store brand.
